WEIGHT REDUCTION BELONGS IN EXPERIENCED HANDS

High-strength and super-high-strength steels have completely conquered the construction machinery sector in the past years.And that isn't particulary surprising .Construction machines have to move great loads,while at the sametime suppoting their own weight.The calculation is simple:the intrinsic weight of the structure counts against the useful losd.What you try to gain on the one side,you have to take off on the other - with - out detracting from the safety of the structure.This is possible using high - strength and super - high - stregth steels for the most part.

An additional factor is that a recuction in the amount of steel naturally lowers the costs for material and manufacture.A leading crene manufacturer has determined that the costs for the supporting structure of mobile cranes can be reduced to 40% by using the high-strength S690Q grade instead of the S355J2G3 grade.The costs drop to as low as 20% when S960Q is used (P.Gerster,DVS-Berichte,Vol. 101(1986)pp.36/49).

HELP YOUR MACHINES LOSE WEIGHT

If the load bearing parts of your machines - for example crane jibs,chassis or free-standing frames- are still made of conventional steel grades,then it is time for you to make a visit to the desing department.Structural components such as these are normally made of hollow sections.Using high-strength DILLIMAX690 the wall thickness can be considerably reduced,if the geometry of the coss-secti- on is changed at the same time.This measure is necessary because the geometry of the cross-section is finaly responsible for the rigidity of the structure.At the end of the day considerable weight savings are achieved with both of these measures.

The strength of DILLIMAX 690 is not only achieved by alloying,but by means of a special manufacturing process:quenching in water followed by subsequent tempering treatment.

This is the reason why DILLIMAX 690 is even tougher than conventional struc- tural steels,a condition of immense importance with construction machinery sub- jected to impacts and blows.This steel therefore offers more safety than its prede- cessors.DILLIMAX 690 retains its high britte fracture insensibility even at low temperatures,particulary the exstra tough grades.You should therefore choose DILLIMAX 690 T or E for machines to be used in low temperature regions.

DILLIMAX CAN DO EVEN MORE

Reduce the size of your steel warehouse DILLIMAX 690 has other,even more interesting properties to suit your warehou- sing operations.For example,the unusually high strength of the steel also results in a higher degree of wear resistance,at least at average wearing stress.In additi- on DILLIMAX 690 demonstrates relatively good strength properties,even in a temperature range of up to 400 C.This means that it can also be used for fans and drying furnaces in the cement industry.

Not afraid of hard work: The advantages of DILLIMAX 690 in aplication are not offset by disadvantages in manufacturing.Of course a little more care is needed when welding as the yield limit of the steel increases.Due to its low carbon content however, DILLIMAX 690 can be welded without preheating using all standart methods, under suitable conditions up to 20 mm plate thickness. Furthermore DILLIMAX 690 can also be cold formed by rounding or edging, whereby increased forming forces and elastic springback should beconsidered. Machining DILLIMAX steels poses also no problem if suitable tools are used.
